What and when?
Take a robot guided tour in the Djanogly Gallery (Lakeside Arts):
- From Tuesday 16 July until Sunday 21 July, during opening hours.
Take part in the research study (i.e. use the robot while being video recorded)
- Thursday 18 July, between 12 pm and 4 pm
- Friday 19 July, between 10 am and 2 pm
- Saturday 20 July, TBC
- Sunday 21 July, TBC
Why?
We are exploring potential uses of robots in museums, such as increasing visitor engagement and accessibility. As robots become more prevalent in public spaces, we want to understand the perspectives and experiences of the diverse range of people in those spaces and examine interaction with and around the robots.
In this project, we will use a Temi robot from the Cobot Maker Space and set up by Robotics for Good at the Djanogly Gallery (Lakeside Arts), University Park Campus, University of Nottingham.
We’ve programmed and tested the robot in this space so that the exhibit and people are safe, and the research team and gallery staff will always be around for unexpected circumstances.
Who?
This is a study conducted by researchers from the School of Computer Science, at the University of Nottingham in collaboration with the company Robotics for Good, and researchers from King’s College London and Cardiff University.
This project is part of the UKRI Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Hub research programme.
Take part in the research!
Use the robot in the gallery: We want to understand how people use and feel about the robot, which is providing a guided tour in the gallery. You will be asked to use the robot and be filmed while using it. We will show you how to use the robot, and we will be around at all times. You can also use the robot without taking part in the research (i.e. not video recorded).
(Optional) interview after using the robot: We want to ask you more about your opinions and feelings about the robot you encountered or used in the gallery. We want to know about the positive aspects, but also any concerns you may have about it.
- Note: You have the right to withdraw from the research at any time without explanation. You also have the right to request that your data be deleted if you do withdraw after your participation in the study.

About the exhibition
175 years ago, John Boot opened a herbalist store on Nottingham’s Goose Gate. To mark this anniversary, Boots has partnered with the University of Nottingham to explore how shopping has evolved since 1849 in this Nottingham exhibition. Read more about it on https://www.lakesidearts.org.uk/exhibition/counter-culture/
About the tour
The curators from this exhibition, Sophie Clapp (Boots) and Richard Hornsey (University of Nottingham) have kindly created and feature on the Counter Culture beauty robot tour. Join them and explore how beauty has changed by Boots over the last 175 years!
